Description
A pre-construction estimator in construction is responsible for:
Reviewing Project Plans: Analyzing architectural and engineering designs to understand scope, materials, and potential challenges.
Cost Estimation: Preparing detailed estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and other project-related expenses to ensure accurate budgeting.
Collaborating with Teams: Working with project managers, architects, and engineers to clarify project details and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Bid Preparation: Developing and submitting competitive bids for projects by gathering quotes from subcontractors and suppliers.
Risk Assessment: Identifying potential risks and cost variables, ensuring that contingencies are in place for unforeseen issues.
Value Engineering: Recommending design changes or alternative materials to reduce costs without compromising quality.
Profile
To be successful as a pre-construction estimator, the following qualifications are typically required:
Education: A bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or a related field is often preferred.
Experience: Several years of experience in construction estimating, project management, or a related area. Knowledge of construction processes, cost structures, and budgeting is crucial.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Procore, Sage, Buildertrend), Microsoft Excel, and other relevant tools for cost analysis and project planning.
Industry Knowledge: Familiarity with local building codes, construction materials, methods, and regulations. An understanding of project lifecycle from planning through execution is essential.
Attention to Detail: Ability to review plans thoroughly, identify potential cost discrepancies, and ensure accuracy in all estimates.
Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with clients, architects, engineers, and contractors.
Problem-Solving: Ability to assess risks and challenges, providing practical solutions while maintaining budget and quality standards.
Certifications: While not always required, certifications such as the Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or LEED accreditation can boost credibility and marketability.
Job Offer
Base Salary:
- Competitive salary between $100,000 and $120,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Additional Compensation:
- Per Project Bonuses: Eligible for performance-based bonuses upon successful completion of individual projects.
