A heavy civil project manager oversees the planning, execution, and delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, utilities, and water systems. They coordinate teams, manage budgets and schedules, ensure regulatory compliance, and resolve on-site challenges to keep the project on track and safe.

Description

  • Oversee all phases of large-scale civil infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, utilities, earthwork, and water/wastewater systems.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources to ensure work is completed on time and within cost.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, field crews, engineers, and inspectors to maintain smooth project execution.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and contract requirements.
  • Identify and resolve on‑site issues, risks, and design conflicts to keep the project progressing efficiently.
  • Communicate regularly with clients, stakeholders, and internal leadership on project status, changes, and milestones.
  • Lead project documentation, including RFIs, submittals, change orders, and progress reports.

Profile

A successful Civil Project Manager should have:

  • Demonstrates deep technical knowledge of heavy civil construction, including highways, bridges, utilities, earthwork, concrete, and site development.
  • Proven ability to manage multi‑million‑dollar projects from pre‑construction through closeout, consistently delivering on time and within budget.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience overseeing field crews, subcontractors, and project engineers while fostering a safe and productive work environment.
  • Skilled in project scheduling, cost control, risk management, and contract administration (RFIs, submittals, change orders, progress documentation).
  • Excellent communication and client‑facing abilities, capable of coordinating with owners, engineers, inspectors, and public agencies.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to safety, with a track record of enforcing company and regulatory safety standards.
  • Proficient in industry tools such as Bluebeam, MS Project, Primavera P6, Procore, or similar project management software.
  • Brings problem‑solving agility and the ability to navigate on‑site challenges, design conflicts, and unexpected field conditions.
  • Holds relevant credentials such as a Civil Engineering or Construction Management degree, PMP certification, or equivalent experience.
  • Displays professionalism, integrity, and the ability to build trusting, long-term relationships with internal teams and stakeholders.
