Senior Mechanical Engineer - Molding - Orlando, FL
This role is responsible for leading the design and advancement of precision molds used in high‑performance glass lens manufacturing, with a strong focus on expanding larger‑diameter lens capabilities. Working closely with senior technical leadership, the position blends deep mechanical design expertise with hands‑on innovation in a highly specialized manufacturing environment. Client Details
My client is a rapidly growing photonics manufacturer specializing in infrared imaging components and systems. Backed by recent acquisitions and expanding in‑house materials capabilities, the company is scaling quickly and investing heavily in next‑generation IR solutions. Description
This role reports directly into the VP of Engineering and is responsible for:
- Partnering with senior technical leadership to master advanced precision mold design principles
- Applying a comprehensive internal mold design methodology aligned with lens geometry, glass types, and manufacturing parameters
- Leading the design and development of complex molds for precision glass lens production
- Driving initiatives to enable larger‑diameter lens molding through feasibility studies, prototyping, and validation
- Creating detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for mold fabrication
- Analyzing mold performance data and implementing design improvements to enhance quality and efficiency
- Troubleshooting complex molding challenges and developing robust technical solutions
- Mentoring engineers and contributing to organizational knowledge in precision mold design
- Supporting new product introductions with innovative mold solutions meeting demanding optical requirements
Profile
A successful candidate will have:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Optical, or Opto‑Mechanical Engineering; Master's preferred
- 5+ years of experience designing infrared optical assemblies (SWIR, MWIR, LWIR) for production
- 3+ years of experience managing technical engineering teams
- Proven ability to convert optical prescriptions into robust, manufacturable opto‑mechanical designs
- Hands‑on experience with DFM/DFA, including machining, diamond turning, molding, coatings, and adhesives
- Proficiency with Creo Parametric, GD&T, and tolerance stack‑up analysis
- Experience with multi‑lens passive and active alignment
- Track record supporting environmental qualification testing for ruggedized optical systems
