Tool Design Engineer | Stamping | Chicago Heights, IL
The Tool Design Engineer will design and develop tooling for single station and progressive die stamping processes using CAD and simulation software to ensure manufacturability, cost-efficiency, and compliance with customer specifications. The Tool Design Engineer will also collaborate cross-functionally to troubleshoot and improve existing tooling operations while driving continuous improvement through proactive design evaluation
Client Details
Our client is a U.S.-based specialty manufacturer headquartered near Chicago Heights, Illinois, developing and producing high‑quality muffler systems, stamped and deep‑drawn components for small and midsize engines. Acquired by a larger parent organization recently and employing approximately 200 people, the company prides itself on full in‑house tooling, stamping, welding, brazing, and finishing, delivering on‑time solutions to leading lawn & garden OEMs while upholding American-made craftsmanship and ISO‑certified quality standards
Description
Key duties and responsibilities will include the following:
- Design stamping, forming, and drawing tools from initial strip layout through full assembly and detail documentation
- Use die design and forming simulation software to optimize layouts for material efficiency, part quality, and tool maintenance
- Create comprehensive support documents including drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), development plans, and tryout records
- Recommend appropriate materials and components for tooling, including tool steels, die sets, and purchased items
- Design jigs and fixtures to support assembly, welding, and inspection processes
- Develop and revise 3D models and part assemblies to improve manufacturability and meet customer requirements
- Troubleshoot tooling and production issues in collaboration with toolmakers and operators to ensure quality and efficiency
- Implement tool modifications in response to engineering changes or product revisions
- Assist with quoting new products by estimating material usage and tool layout requirements
- Produce detailed part drawings to support both tool development and quality control processes
Profile
The successful candidate will possess the following:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Minimum 5 years of experience designing complex progressive stamping dies
- Proficient in stamping simulation software
- Die Construction and tryout experience
- Proficient in utilizing 3D CAD software (Solidworks, Creo)
- Knowledge and experience in tool manufacturing technology, equipment and methods
- Understanding of stamping press technology and the parameters that affect die design
- Understanding of die sensors, vision inspection and die protection
- Proven ability to deal with changes while managing multiple projects
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Proficient in interpreting GD&T requirements on product drawings
What will set you apart:
- Experience working in an ISO 9001 facility
- Experience with AutoCAD
- Knowledge of LogoPress within SolidWorks
- A material science or metallurgical studies background
Job Offer
- Base salary between $85,000 - $115,000, depending on total experience
- Annual bonus incentive
- 4 total weeks PTO
- 5% 401k match
