Director of Facilities

The Director of Facilities is responsible for the overall management, maintenance, and safety of the buildings' physical plant and infrastructure. This includes overseeing day-to-day operations, ensuring compliance with safety standards, managing facility improvement projects, and maintaining a clean, safe, and functional environment.

Description

  • Facilities Management: Oversee the daily operations of the school's buildings and grounds, including classrooms, administrative offices, restrooms, outdoor spaces, and parking lots.
  • Maintenance & Repairs: Ensure the timely and efficient repair and maintenance of school buildings, equipment, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and other infrastructure.
  • Safety & Compliance: Maintain a safe, secure environment for students, staff, and visitors. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including fire codes, environmental health standards, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Budgeting & Resource Allocation: Develop and manage the facilities budget, ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to maintain the school's physical assets. Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining high-quality service.
  • Vendor & Contractor Management: Oversee relationships with external contractors and service providers for janitorial, landscaping, pest control, and specialized maintenance services. Ensure all contracts are effectively managed.
  • Capital Projects: Plan and oversee capital improvement projects, including renovations, facility upgrades, and new construction projects. Work closely with architects, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure timely and cost-effective completion.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency protocols and contingency plans. Coordinate with local authorities and staff to prepare for and respond to emergencies (e.g., natural disasters, fire drills, etc.).
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of custodial, maintenance, and grounds staff, ensuring they have the resources, training, and support needed to perform their jobs effectively.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Promote sustainability practices, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and environmentally-friendly operations in the maintenance and use of school facilities.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with school administration, faculty, and staff to address facility needs and improve operational efficiency. Provide regular updates to the leadership team regarding facilities operations.

Profile

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Business Administration, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience: A minimum of 4-6 years of experience in facilities management, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Experience in a school or educational setting is highly preferred.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, and safety protocols.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Budget management and financial acumen.
    • Effective leadership and team management abilities.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including staff, vendors, and contractors.
    • Knowledge of sustainability and green building practices is a plus.
