Sr. Process Design Engineer

Michael Page Wilton, CT (Onsite) Full-Time
$100,000 - $135,000/Year

Lead projects from concept through commissioning, with a solid grasp of project economics, equipment specifications, and the ability to clearly communicate engineering decisions. Support scale-ups involving reaction and distillation systems across 36 reactors, including the design or selection of process equipment and all supporting components such as pumps, controls, and valves for new or upgraded chemical manufacturing systems.

Description

  • Design or select process equipment and supporting systems-including pumps, controls, and valves-to build new chemical manufacturing systems or upgrade existing ones.
  • Implement process improvements and capacity changes through the Engineering Change Notification (ECN) process, incorporating input from the Process Engineering Group to enhance safety, environmental compliance, quality, and productivity.
  • Support the Production team by training chemical operators on the proper use of both existing and updated manufacturing systems.
  • Collaborate with the Process Engineering Group to develop and maintain operating manuals and standard operating procedures aligned with Engineering Department standards.
  • Prepare Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), material and energy balances, utility requirements, piping specifications, and controls architecture for new or modified chemical systems.
  • Produce equipment layouts, design sketches, instrumentation specifications, and utility piping plans for process upgrades and new installations.
  • Troubleshoot current operations and drive improvements that reduce cost, increase capacity, enhance productivity, or improve energy efficiency.
  • Assess processes and equipment for potential hazards and recommend upgrades that improve safety and operability.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste, emissions, and pollution while strengthening environmental compliance.
  • Lead or support Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) for new or modified systems and help resolve findings from PHAs and incident reports.
  • Source and procure specialized process equipment and auxiliary systems needed for operations.
  • Estimate project costs, develop project schedules, and provide progress updates as required.
  • Assist with the installation and startup of new or revised systems, including preparing required ECNs and participating in Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR).
  • Scale up laboratory and pilot-scale process developments into full production when needed.
  • Serve as a member of the site Safety and Health Committee.
  • Train for and participate on the facility's Hazardous Materials response team.

Profile

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from an accredited institution.
  • 10 - 20 years of experience in design, project, and process engineering within chemical plant operations and batch processing environments
  • Solid technical expertise in chemical engineering operations, including heat transfer, fluid dynamics, mass transfer, distillation, reaction engineering, and liquid-liquid extraction.
  • Proficiency with computers for both business and technical tasks.
  • Strong organizational discipline, persistence, sound judgment, and reliable follow-through.
  • Capable of managing several engineering projects across different departments.
