Description

A Construction Estimator working on K-12 projects has a crucial role in determining project costs and helping to shape project feasibility and budget alignment. Their responsibilities typically include:

  1. Cost Estimation and Budgeting: Develop detailed cost estimates for all phases of K-12 construction projects, including materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs. Account for the unique requirements of educational buildings, such as specialized classroom equipment, ADA compliance, and safety features.

  2. Scope Review and Analysis: Review project plans, specifications, and scope documents to fully understand the requirements of K-12 construction. Identify any specific needs, like auditorium spaces, gymnasiums, science labs, or playground areas, and ensure they are accurately reflected in the estimate.

  3. Preliminary and Detailed Estimating: Prepare both preliminary budgets for early-stage planning and detailed estimates as the project advances. Work closely with design and project management teams to adjust estimates based on evolving project designs and requirements.

  4. Market Research and Cost Data Maintenance: Research market conditions and pricing for construction materials and labor, staying updated on trends that could impact school construction costs. Maintain a database of cost information for frequently used materials and services in educational projects.

  5. Bid Solicitation and Review: Solicit bids from subcontractors and vendors, ensuring they align with project requirements and budget. Review and analyze subcontractor bids, ensuring accuracy, competitiveness, and their ability to meet school-specific needs.

  6. Value Engineering: Provide recommendations for cost-saving measures without compromising quality or educational standards. Work collaboratively with architects and project managers to explore alternative materials or construction methods that maintain functionality and durability within budget.

Profile

  • Relevant Experience: Prior experience in estimating, especially for K-12 or institutional projects, with a solid understanding of educational facility requirements.
  • Educational Background: A degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field, along with additional coursework or certifications in cost estimating.
  • Proficiency with Estimating Software: Familiarity with estimating software such as ProEst, Sage Estimating, Bluebeam, or Microsoft Excel for creating detailed estimates.
  • Strong Analytical Skills: Ability to accurately analyze project documents, assess scope, and evaluate costs, materials, and labor needed for K-12 environments.
  • Market Knowledge: Current knowledge of construction material costs, labor rates, and market conditions, especially as they relate to K-12 projects.
  • Detail-Oriented: High attention to detail to ensure precise cost breakdowns and to account for all elements needed in a school construction project.
  • Value Engineering Insight: Skills in identifying cost-saving alternatives without compromising on quality or educational standards.
  • Effective Communication: Ability to explain cost estimates clearly and professionally to school officials, project teams, and stakeholders.
