Construction Superintendent

The Superintendent is the on-site leader responsible for field execution, safety, quality, scheduling, trade coordination, and client/architect relations. You'll run day-to-day site operations for historically sensitive projects, ensuring work meets the Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, municipal requirements, and contract documents-on time and on budget.

Our client is a highly skilled general contractor specializing in the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic structures across Connecticut-museums, town halls, libraries, houses of worship, mills, and landmark residential properties. Our work blends craftsmanship with modern construction management, and we partner closely with owners, architects, conservators, and the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office.

Description

Field Leadership & Execution

• Lead all on-site activities from mobilization through punch list and closeout.
• Build, maintain, and drive the 3-week look-ahead and overall master schedule; sequence work to protect historic materials and avoid rework.
• Coordinate, supervise, and hold accountable all subcontractors, vendors, and self-perform crews.
• Conduct daily huddles and weekly trade coordination meetings; issue meeting notes and action items.

Historic Preservation & Quality

• Enforce workmanship standards aligned with Secretary of the Interior's Standards; protect historic fabric through mockups, pre-task planning, and oversight.
• Coordinate with architects, preservation consultants, and conservators on methods and materials (e.g., lime-based mortars, wood species, sash repair, slate/metal roofing, millwork replication, historic paint analysis).
• Review and manage submittals, shop drawings, and samples; oversee mockups and approvals.
• Maintain meticulous daily reports, progress photos, and protection logs (temporary protection, environmental controls, vibration monitoring as applicable).

Safety & Compliance

• Own site safety: conduct site-specific orientation, JHAs/THAs, daily safety walks, and toolbox talks.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements (OSHA 30 preferred), EPA RRP (lead-safe work practices), asbestos awareness, and site-specific plans.
• Implement site logistics plans, fencing, egress, signage, and traffic/pedestrian controls (as required by municipalities).
• Enforce dust control, moisture management, and fire prevention (especially on wood frames).

Project Controls

• Track labor, deliveries, equipment, and materials; verify quantities and conditions upon receipt.
• Support project manager with procurement lead times and material status; anticipate long-lead items (custom windows, custom millwork, specialty hardware, stone).
• Manage RFI generation, field-directed changes, and punch lists; assist with change order pricing validation.

Stakeholder & Community Relations

• Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for owners, architects, inspectors, and neighbors.
• Maintain a professional, respectful presence in occupied or public settings (e.g., active libraries, churches, civic buildings).

Closeout

• Oversee thorough punch completion, training, O&M/manuals (with PM), and as-built documentation.
• Deliver a clean, complete site ready for occupancy and future preservation.

Profile

• 5-10+ years of superintendent or foreman experience
• Strong knowledge of historic methods and materials (masonry restoration, window/sash repair, millwork, roofing, plaster, finishes).
• Mastery of reading drawings/specs (including preservation details and finish schedules).
• Proven ability to build and maintain short-interval schedules and drive trade coordination.
• Strong safety record and knowledge of OSHA standards; OSHA 30 (or willingness to obtain).
• EPA RRP Lead Renovator certification (or willingness to obtain quickly).
• Proficiency with construction software (Procore or similar), MS Office/Teams, and plan-viewing apps.
• Valid driver's license; ability to travel throughout Connecticut and occasionally to neighboring states.
