Director of Operations - Metals Manufacturing - Springfield, MA
The Director of Operations, reporting to the President, oversees the production of timing drive systems at a plant just outside of Springfield, MA, with primary responsibility for ensuring Safety, Quality, Productivity, and Profitability.
Client Details
My client is a well known Automotive Manufacturer that has several small production sites around Springfield, MA, with roughly 300 employees. They have been around for over a hundred years and work primarily with metal materials.
Description
In this role you will report to the company President and be responsible for:
- Developing and cascading the plant budget to departmental levels.
- Implementing procedures and housekeeping practices to reduce accidents and maintain low OSHA recordable rates, while ensuring compliance with OSHA, MA Dept. of Public Safety, EPA, and MA DEP through inspections, follow-ups, and training.
- Enforcing work instructions and quality standards to meet product specifications, initiating preventive and corrective actions as needed, supporting new product development with process updates and training, and conducting production audits to ensure quality compliance.
- Ensuring proper scheduling and resource allocation to meet production demands, including workforce, equipment, and services, while monitoring inventory, scrap, and downtime with disciplined reporting.
- Tracking and improving shop OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).
- Managing costs and driving continuous improvement by exceeding budget goals for supplies and materials, leading cost-reduction projects, and organizing formal CI teams involving managers, supervisors, and floor personnel.
- Fostering a collaborative and inclusive management style to empower teams and achieve commitments while sharing best practices across the business.
- Providing leadership in employee development, including talent acquisition, performance management, training, coaching, and motivation, while recognizing and rewarding employee contributions toward business goals.
- Promoting a culture of continuous improvement through training, teamwork, and communication to eliminate problems and reduce costs.
- Adhering to and communicating company policies, work rules, and union contracts.
- Demonstrating high ethical standards and compliance with company policies, union agreements, and laws, while achieving objectives with minimal supervision.
Profile
A successful candidate will have:
- 10+ years of hands on manufacturing experience
- 5+ years of engineering management experience
- Union and Metals experience a plus
- Automotive experience preferred
- Hands on mindset
- MRP/ ERP system skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
