We are currently partnered up with a chemical manufacturing company in their search for an EHS Engineer to join the Richmond, VA plant. This plant has approximately 250 employees and this role will report up into the Site Lead and join a team of 3 additional EHS professionals. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience ideally in a chemical, pharma, or food & beverage industry, hands on experience in a plant, and experience implementing new policies and procedures. Description
The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer - Chemical Manufacturing will be responsible for the following:
- Develop, implement, and maintain EHS programs tailored to a chemical R&D and production environment.
- Conduct regular audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, local environmental regulations, and industry standards (e.g., NFPA, ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
- Collaborate with R&D scientists, chemical engineers, and operations staff to ensure safe lab and pilot plant operations.
- Investigate incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions; lead root cause analyses and implement corrective/preventive actions.
- Maintain SDS databases, chemical inventories, and hazardous materials handling protocols.
- Lead training programs on safety procedures, emergency response, chemical hygiene, PPE use, and waste management.
- Support permitting processes and regulatory reporting (e.g., air emissions, hazardous waste, water discharge).
- Manage environmental monitoring programs (e.g., air, water, soil, and noise).
- Provide EHS guidance during design reviews for new experiments, scale-ups, and equipment installations.
- Promote a strong safety culture and lead EHS initiatives that drive continuous improvement.
Profile
The Ideal Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer - Chemical Manufacturing will have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- 5-10+ years of EHS experience in a chemical, pharmaceutical, or R&D manufacturing environment.
- Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, or CHMM are a plus.
- In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local EHS regulations.
- Experience with process safety, hazard communication, and chemical hygiene plans.
- Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.
- Proficient in EHS software and MS Office Suite.
Job Offer
The successful Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer - Chemical Manufacturing will be rewarded with the following:
- Base Salary of $95,000-$145,000 depending on experience
- Bonus of 10%
