Civil Estimator
A heavy civil estimator analyzes plans, specifications, and site conditions to determine the costs, materials, labor, and risks associated with large-scale infrastructure projects like highways, bridges, and utilities. They develop detailed bid proposals and work closely with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure accurate pricing and competitive submissions.

Our client is a New Jersey-based heavy civil construction firm founded in 1981 that serves the New Jersey and Greater NYC regions, specializing in heavy highway construction, bridgework, utilities, tunneling, airports, commercial development, landfill remediation, and general construction.

Description
- Reviews project plans, specifications, and geotechnical data to understand scope and requirements.
- Calculates quantities of materials, labor, and equipment needed for large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Prepares detailed cost estimates, budgets, and bid proposals for projects such as highways, bridges, utilities, and sitework.
- Evaluates subcontractor and supplier quotes to ensure accurate and competitive pricing.
- Identifies project risks, constructability issues, and value‑engineering opportunities.
- Collaborates with project managers, engineers, and field teams to refine estimates and support bid strategies.
- Tracks historical cost data and market pricing trends to improve estimate accuracy.

A successful candidate should have:
- Possesses strong ability to read and interpret complex civil engineering plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports.
- Accurately performs quantity takeoffs and develops detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractor work.
- Understands construction means and methods, sequencing, and jobsite logistics to ensure realistic, buildable estimates.
- Maintains strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to secure competitive pricing and reliable input.
- Uses estimating software and digital tools efficiently to improve precision, speed, and documentation.
- Identifies potential risks, constructability challenges, and value‑engineering opportunities early in the bidding process.
- Communicates clearly with project managers, engineers, field teams, and clients to align expectations and refine estimate scope.
- Stays current on market conditions, pricing trends, and industry standards to keep estimates accurate and competitive.
- Demonstrates strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a commitment to meeting tight deadlines.
- Approaches each estimate with integrity, transparency, and a focus on long‑term client and company success.
