Superintendent (Sitework Contractor)

The Superintendent is responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day field operations for site development, excavation, utility installation, and civil infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate is an experienced field supervisor with deep knowledge of earthwork, grading, utilities, and heavy civil workflows, and thrives in a fast‑paced, equipment‑intensive environment.

My client is a full‑service, union site construction firm specializing in earthmoving, site development, heavy highway infrastructure, underground utilities, demolition, and hauling. With over 50 years of experience, they deliver more than 90% of contract work in‑house, leveraging a large equipment fleet and a highly skilled workforce to complete complex public and private projects on time and on budget. Description

  • Direct, supervise, and coordinate all onsite field crews, subcontractors, and equipment operations for site development, excavation, and utility construction.
  • Ensure work is executed according to project plans, specifications, and company's established construction methods.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and foremen to maintain seamless communication and workflow across the project lifecycle.
  • Enforce all company and OSHA safety standards on the job site.
  • Conduct daily safety briefings, inspections, and corrective actions to maintain a hazard‑free work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to heavy civil and utility construction.
  • Maintain production goals for earthmoving, utility installation, demolition, and related sitework activities.
  • Oversee quality control for trenching, grading, backfill, stormwater systems, water/wastewater utilities, and roadway subgrades.
  • Coordinate inspections and documentation to ensure full compliance with specifications.
  • Plan daily and weekly work activities, assigning manpower, materials, and equipment efficiently.
  • Work closely with the company's full-service trucking fleet to coordinate material deliveries and equipment transport.
  • Monitor progress and adjust schedules to address project changes, weather, or unforeseen field conditions.
  • Serve as the primary onsite representative, maintaining strong relationships with clients, engineers, inspectors, and stakeholders.
  • Provide daily updates, resolve field issues, and uphold the company's mission of delivering high-quality, client‑focused service.

Profile

  • 5+ years of supervisory experience in site development, excavation, or heavy civil construction.
  • Strong knowledge of earthwork operations, underground utilities (water, sewer, storm), and site infrastructure.
  • Experience managing union crews and working within union environments.
  • Ability to read civil plans, grading layouts, utility profiles, and construction documents.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Proven track record of delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Experience with sitework on commercial, institutional, governmental, and residential projects.
  • Familiarity with GPS machine control, survey layouts, and modern sitework technologies.
  • CDL or equipment operation background is a plus.
