Description

The Financial Controller will play a pivotal role in managing and optimizing the financial operations of the construction company, ensuring financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, and efficient cash flow management. As a key leader within the finance department, the Financial Controller will oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), job cost accounting, payroll, and general ledger maintenance. This role requires an individual with extensive experience in the construction industry who can provide robust financial oversight while supporting the company's growth objectives.

This position requires a hands-on approach to ensure all financial processes are functioning effectively, with a focus on maintaining strong internal controls, delivering timely and accurate financial reports, and leading budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis efforts. The Financial Controller will also be instrumental in providing leadership and guidance to the finance team, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations, and acting as the main liaison for audits and tax filings.

  • Supervise all aspects of the company's financial operations, including accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), job cost accounting, payroll processing, and cash flow management.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of AP/AR transactions and payroll, maintaining a strong system of controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Review job cost accounting reports to ensure accurate tracking of project-related expenses, revenues, and profitability.
  • Monitor and manage daily cash flow to ensure sufficient liquidity to meet operational needs and project requirements.
  • Establish, monitor, and enforce a robust system of internal accounting controls to ensure financial integrity and compliance with industry standards.
  • Oversee the preparation and maintenance of financial records and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Provide guidance and training to the finance team on best practices for internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve internal financial processes, recommending and implementing system upgrades as needed.
  • Lead the development of the company's annual budget and assist with long-term financial planning.
  • Collaborate with department heads to forecast financial performance, identify variances, and recommend adjustments to stay within budgetary constraints.
  • Manage and maintain the Work-In-Progress (WIP) reporting process to track project profitability, ensure accurate revenue recognition, and assess job cost performance.
  • Maintain and reconcile the General Ledger (GL), ensuring all entries are accurate and complete.
  • Review and reconcile accounts, ensuring proper documentation and support for all entries.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports, in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Act as the primary liaison with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory authorities, coordinating all financial reviews, audits, and tax filings.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable financial, legal, and regulatory requirements, including state registrations, business licenses, and tax licenses.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of construction industry regulations, tax laws, and accounting standards, ensuring the company adheres to all relevant policies.
  • Prepare and file all required state and local business registrations, maintaining proper documentation for insurance, bonding, and licensing purposes.

Profile

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in accounting or financial management, with at least 3 years in a construction industry environment.
  • Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of construction accounting software (e.g., Sage300/Timberline preferred), job costing systems, and financial reporting tools.
  • Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of financial statements, GAAP, WIP reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and project cost analysis.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop a finance team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong financial analysis skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and provide actionable insights.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
