NPI Engineering Manager - Optical Manufacturing
The NPI Engineering Manager leads the design, development, and production of advanced infrared opto‑mechanical assemblies while managing and growing a high‑performing engineering team. The position requires deep expertise in ruggedized, athermal optical systems and hands-on involvement from concept through high‑volume manufacturability.

My client is a rapidly growing photonics manufacturer specializing in infrared imaging components and systems. Backed by recent acquisitions and expanding in‑house materials capabilities, the company is scaling quickly and investing heavily in next‑generation IR solutions. Description
This role reports directly into the VP of Engineering and is responsible for:
- Leading the design and development of SWIR, MWIR, and LWIR opto‑mechanical assemblies from concept through production release
- Translating optical prescriptions into manufacturable mechanical designs optimized for CTE control, preload, centration, tilt, and stress reduction
- Designing and implementing lens mounting, retention, and alignment strategies for harsh environmental conditions
- Creating and managing CAD models, drawings, and configurations using Creo Parametric in compliance with GD&T and internal standards
- Partnering with optical, manufacturing, and supplier teams to ensure designs follow DFM/DFA best practices
- Overseeing multi‑lens assembly processes and performing passive and active alignment
- Supporting material and coating selection, adhesive/epoxy evaluation, and manufacturing process improvements
- Driving environmental qualification efforts, including thermal, shock, vibration, sealing, and contamination testing
- Establishing design standards, review procedures, and engineering documentation processes
- Mentoring and developing team members through coaching, training, and performance feedback
- Collaborating with program management and customers to meet schedule, cost, and system performance objectives
Profile
A successful candidate will have:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Optical, or Opto‑Mechanical Engineering; Master's preferred
- 5+ years of experience designing infrared optical assemblies (SWIR, MWIR, LWIR) for production
- 3+ years of experience managing technical engineering teams
- Proven ability to convert optical prescriptions into robust, manufacturable opto‑mechanical designs
- Hands‑on experience with DFM/DFA, including machining, diamond turning, molding, coatings, and adhesives
- Proficiency with Creo Parametric, GD&T, and tolerance stack‑up analysis
- Experience with multi‑lens passive and active alignment
- Track record supporting environmental qualification testing for ruggedized optical systems
