A well-established municipal general contractor based in Newport News, VA, with 37 years in business and $40M in annual revenue. They specialize in K-12 schools, fire stations, police stations, and military facilities, with most projects ranging from $3M to $45M across the Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Charlottesville markets.
With a close-knit team of 25-30 and long-tenured leadership, the company offers strong stability and is focused on long-term employee growth. They typically run 4-6 projects at a time and are known for community-centered work and trusted subcontractor relationships.
Description
The Commercial Construction Project Manager - Newport News, VA will be responsible for:
- Managing 2-3 active commercial construction projects simultaneously
- Acting as the main point of contact for owners, architects, and key stakeholders
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with subcontractors, especially in the Richmond market
- Scouting and prequalifying subcontractors, and reviewing bid submissions
- Leading project meetings with clients, design teams, and internal staff
- Ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to quality standards
- Conducting regular site visits (2-3 days/week) to monitor schedules, budgets, and progress
- Preparing and managing subcontractor agreements, change orders, RFIs, and submittals
- Collaborating with superintendents, field teams, and executives to ensure project success
- Assisting in identifying and pursuing new work opportunities
- Maintaining thorough project documentation and reporting throughout all phases
- Contributing to a team-oriented culture focused on retention and long-term growth
Profile
The Commercial Construction Project Manager - Newport News, VA will have:
- 10+ years of commercial construction experience
- Strong knowledge of construction processes, codes, and best practices
- Experience managing multiple projects (2-3) simultaneously
- Established network of subcontractors in the Richmond market preferred
- Ability to scout new work and build subcontractor relationships
- Excellent communication with owners, architects, and stakeholders
- Success in budgeting, scheduling, and resource management
- Experience managing project documentation (contracts, RFIs, change orders)
- Comfort splitting time between job site (2-3 days/week) and office, with some remote work potential
- Leadership skills focused on long-term growth and team retention
- Proactive problem-solving and decision-making
- Proficiency in construction management software and Microsoft Office
- Ability to maintain quality, safety, and compliance standards
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Commitment to building lasting relationships in the company and local market
