Manufacturing - Director of Operations - Springfield, MA
The Director of Operations, reporting to senior leadership, oversees the production of key systems and is accountable for ensuring safety, quality, productivity, and profitability at the designated facility.

Description
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for developing the budget for the plant and cascading it down to the department level.
- Establishes procedures and housekeeping practices aimed at reducing accidents and maintaining low OSHA recordable rates. Ensures compliance with OSHA, the MA Department of Public Safety, EPA, and MA DEP. Supports safety programs through inspections, follow-ups, and training.
- Enforces Work Instructions and Quality Standards to ensure full compliance with product specifications. Initiates preventive and corrective action teams to address quality issues. Supports new product development by updating processes and conducting training. Ensures production area audits to verify adherence to quality standards.
- Schedule and Resource Planning: Ensures resources are available to meet production schedule requirements, including staffing, equipment, and indirect services. Maintains disciplined reporting of inventory, scrap, and production downtime.
- Tracks, monitors, and improves shop OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).
- Cost Control and Continuous Improvement: Achieves or exceeds budget goals related to supplies, tooling, and indirect materials. Leads initiatives to reduce costs in areas such as production tooling, abrasives, chemicals, and lubricants. Leads formal Continuous Improvement (CI) teams with Managers, Supervisors, and floor personnel.
- Empowers teams with a collaborative and inclusive managerial approach, balancing efforts to achieve commitments. Actively shares best practices across the business.
- Provides leadership and fosters employee development through talent acquisition, performance management, training, coaching, and motivating management, supervisory, and hourly staff in alignment with business goals. Recognizes and rewards employees for contributing to results.
- Fosters a culture of Continuous Improvement to address problems and reduce costs. Emphasizes the importance of training, teamwork, and communication.
- Understands, communicates, and adheres to all organizational policies, work rules, and Union agreements.
- Expected to achieve goals with a high ethical standard and minimal supervision while consistently complying with organizational policies, work rules, Union agreements, and applicable laws.
Profile
Ideal Candidate:
- 8 to 10 years of experience in automotive manufacturing, with a preference for 10+ years of management experience working with metals.
- Strong knowledge and hands-on experience in Lean Manufacturing, Project Management, and ISO procedures.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Skilled in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, and presenting information clearly to groups of managers, clients, and the general public.
- Proficient in mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. Able to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to real-world situations.
- Skilled in problem-solving, data collection, and drawing conclusions from complex information. Ability to interpret technical instructions in both mathematical and diagram form, managing abstract and concrete variables.
- 8 to 10 years of experience leading and managing teams effectively, with a proven record of executing employee relations strategies and fostering a positive work environment.
- Strong business acumen and strategic thinking, with demonstrated success in setting and exceeding customer service goals and profit targets.
- Impeccable integrity and superior interpersonal skills, able to engage and communicate effectively with personnel at all levels of the organization.
- Proficient in Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and/or Six Sigma, with experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and MRP/ERP systems.
