Product Design Engineer - Somers, CT

My client is seeking a Product Design Engineer to join their R&D team out of the Somers, CT area. In this position you will play a key role in developing products for a leading US manufacturer.

Description

Some of the responsibilities for the Product Design Engineer may include:

  • Design & Development: Utilize CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks) to create and modify designs, emphasizing lean manufacturing principles and customer satisfaction.
  • Engineering Analysis: Apply methods such as Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), stress analysis (both Finite Element Analysis and hand calculations), kinematic and dynamic analysis, and fatigue analysis to ensure design integrity.
  • Material Selection: Choose appropriate materials for new products or to enhance existing designs, considering factors like durability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Technical Documentation: Prepare comprehensive technical data packages, including detailed drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ANSI/ASME Y14.5M standards.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including production, marketing, sales, purchasing, and quality control, to ensure cohesive product development.
  • Vendor Interaction: Engage with suppliers regarding parts they provide or propose, ensuring quality and compatibility with Ruger's products.
  • Product Testing: Conduct and oversee product testing to validate design performance and safety.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement cost-reduction strategies and design enhancements to improve product quality and manufacturability.​

Profile

A successful Product Design Engineer should have the following qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years in mechanical design, preferably with a focus on mechanisms, cams, and linkage systems.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    • Advanced skills in CAD modeling, preferably using SolidWorks.
    • Proficient in GD&T and creation of detailed assembly drawings.
    • Strong analytical skills with a deep understanding of engineering theories.
    • Familiarity with lean manufacturing and product development methodologies.
    • Knowledge of steel metallurgy and processing.
    • Understanding of machining, polymer injection molding, Metal Injection Molding (MIM), stamping, and investment casting.
