Microbiologist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Microbiologist to join a leading manufacturing environment within the dietary supplement, food, or pharmaceutical industry. This role is integral to ensuring the microbiological integrity of raw materials, finished products, packaging components, production environments, and processes.

Description

  • Perform and oversee microbiological testing of raw materials, in-process materials, finished products, and packaging components per applicable regulatory and internal specifications
  • Author, review, and revise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), validation protocols, test methods, and controlled documents
  • Serve as the microbiology subject matter expert during audits, inspections, and product quality investigations
  • Oversee environmental monitoring programs (air, surface, water, personnel) and trend/report results
  • Develop, execute, and document validation protocols for cleaning, equipment, and process changes
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Quality, Manufacturing, and Sanitation teams on microbiological risk and process impact
  • Conduct validation activities including environmental monitoring assessments, cleaning verification, and risk evaluations
  • Support contamination control strategies and microbiological risk assessments across departments
  • Train and mentor junior staff on laboratory methods, aseptic technique, and compliance requirements
  • Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment while ensuring ongoing GMP and GLP compliance
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging pathogens, and regulatory updates
  • Review outsourced microbiological results and investigate discrepancies
  • Ensure adherence to laboratory safety practices and response procedures
  • Conduct cleaning and sanitization verification (e.g., ATP testing, swabbing)
  • Develop and implement microbiological testing methods, including rapid methods where applicable
  • Analyze complex data, identify trends, and present findings to management
  • Lead investigations into out-of-specification (OOS) or atypical results, including root cause analysis and CAPA
  • Support customer complaint investigations related to microbiological quality
  • Provide input on specifications, regulatory compliance, and client-facing discussions
  • Deliver microbiology and GMP training to laboratory and production personnel
  • Maintain accurate documentation in alignment with data integrity and traceability requirements
  • Support facility cleaning and sanitization programs
  • Participate in internal audits, supplier audits, and regulatory inspections
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Profile

A successful Microbiologist should have:

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in a GMP-regulated microbiology laboratory (dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals, or food manufacturing preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of microbiological test methods (e.g., USP , , , )
  • Experience working with applicable regulatory frameworks (e.g., 21 CFR Part 111, 21 CFR Part 117)
  • Demonstrated experience with method validation, investigations, and technical report writing
  • Familiarity with laboratory documentation practices and data integrity principles
  • Experience using LIMS or similar digital laboratory systems
  • Hands-on experience with microbiological testing (e.g., APC, yeast and mold, coliforms, pathogens)
  • Experience supporting audits or inspections (FDA, NSF, UL, or similar)
