General Counsel

The General Counsel will oversee all legal aspects of the organization, ensuring compliance and providing strategic legal counsel to the senior leadership team. This role is critical in managing legal risks and supporting the company's long-term goals in the affordable housing property management, construction and development space.

This long established and highly reputable property management, construction and development organization is recognized for their positive and collaborative medium-sized company and portfolio including c. 8,000 affordable housing units. The organization is committed to delivering excellence in their field and are looking to hire a new General Counsel for their legal department to drive legal and compliance matters.

Description

The General Counsel will handle varied legal matters:

• Provide expert legal counsel to the organization on property management, construction and development legal matters.
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, leases, and other legal documents including associated due diligence.
• Manage relationships with external counsel.
• Advise senior leadership and the wider business on legal risks and strategic decisions.
• Oversee legal disputes, litigation, and arbitration processes as needed including slip & fall issues.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures to minimize legal risks.
• Stay updated on legal developments relevant to the affordable housing property management, construction and development industry.

Profile

The General Counsel should have demonstrable skills & experience:

• A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Admission to the New York state bar and in good standing.
• Additional admission in CT, NJ and PA beneficial but not essential.
• 10+ years relevant experience providing in-house counsel in the property management, construction and property development law and related legal matters in the affordable housing space.
• Strong contract negotiation and drafting skills.
• Previously managed outside counsel.
• Excellent leadership and communication abilities.

Job Offer

• Competitive base salary estimated between $185,000 and $250,000 annually.
