Civil Estimator
A civil estimator specializing in heavy highway projects is responsible for analyzing plans, specifications, and site conditions to accurately forecast costs for large-scale infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and interchanges. They prepare detailed quantity takeoffs, evaluate subcontractor bids, and ensure compliance with DOT standards to deliver competitive and precise project estimates.
Client Details
Our client is a heavy and highway construction contractor based in New Jersey, with a history dating back to the early 1900s. The company specializes in road and bridge construction, milling, paving, pipe work, and asphalt supply, serving both public agencies like the NJ Department of Transportation and private clients such as universities and hospitals, while also offering aggregate materials and recycling services through its affiliated firms.
Description
- Review project plans and specifications to understand scope, materials, and requirements for heavy highway projects.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, paving, drainage, and structural components.
- Analyze labor, equipment, and material costs to develop accurate estimates.
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes for specialized work and materials.
- Prepare cost summaries and bid proposals in compliance with DOT and client standards.
- Assess project risks and incorporate contingencies into estimates.
- Collaborate with project managers and engineers to ensure alignment between design and cost projections.
- Use estimating software and tools (e.g., HCSS HeavyBid, Excel) for calculations and reporting.
- Stay current with industry pricing trends and regulations affecting highway construction.

- Market Awareness: Keeps up with material pricing, labor rates, and regulatory changes impacting highway construction.
- Time Management: Meets tight bid deadlines while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
- Negotiation Skills: Secures competitive subcontractor and supplier pricing to strengthen bid competitiveness.
