Controller

Our client, a major construction company based in Rockford, IL, is looking for an experienced Controller with experience in the construction industry. This is a temp to perm role, and the successful candidate will be immediately available to start a new role.

Client Details

Premier construction company and general contractor based in Rockford, IL. This role is 5 days per week in office, and offers a chance to run financial operations & oversee the accounting team at an industry leader in Illinois.

Description

This role will involve:

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including cash, AP, payroll, and general ledger
• Manage and mentor accounting staff to ensure accountability and performance
• Monitor and reconcile multiple bank accounts, ensuring up-to-date cash position daily
• Ensure payroll is reviewed and posted timely each week (union and non-union)
• Direct the AP cycle, subcontractor compliance checks, and check run scheduling
• Partner with Project Managers to ensure accurate job cost data and budget alignment
• Coordinate month-end close, financial reporting, and support audit readiness
• Communicate with ownership regarding cash flow, projections, and any red flags
• Support documentation of procedures, particularly around payroll, job costing, and reporting
• Identify process improvements and help optimize the use of ERP tools

Profile

The successful candidate will have:

• Experience with New Point Vista (or Viewpoint Vista) is highly preferred
• Proficiency in construction ERP systems such as Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, Jonas, or CMiC will be considered valuable
• Strong Excel skills required; ability to navigate large data sets and reconcile complex transactions
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Minimum 5-7 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role
• Prior experience in construction or project-based accounting strongly preferred
