Chief Estimator - Construction
This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for launching and leading a newly formed estimating department within a fast-growing commercial construction firm. The Chief Estimator will oversee a team of four estimators and take ownership of estimating across high-profile commercial, retail, and financial institution projects up to $50M.

Based in North Plainfield, New Jersey, this firm is a well-established and growing construction company with deep expertise across financial institutions, corporate interiors, healthcare, pharmaceutical, retail, and industrial sectors. Known for their integrity and delivery, they've traditionally relied on project managers for estimating but are now building a centralized estimating function to support increased project volume. The company culture values leadership, initiative, and expertise - and the owners are directly invested in the success of this position.
Description
Team Leadership: Lead the estimating department, overseeing four junior to mid-level estimators
Estimating: Provide detailed cost estimates for commercial and retail construction projects, including financial institutions (banks), offices, and interior renovations
Project Management: Collaborate with project managers, owners, and pre-construction teams to deliver accurate, competitive, and timely bids
Business Development: Support business development by providing conceptual and budget estimates during proposal stages
Quality Control: Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness of all estimates
Mentorship: Mentor and train the estimating team to build long-term internal capabilities
Profile
10+ years of construction estimating experience, with a strong focus on commercial retail and financial institutions (banks)
Proven track record of delivering estimates on projects up to $50M
Experienced in both ground-up and renovation work
Skilled in managing and mentoring teams, with the ability to lead, train, and inspire
Strong organizational and communication skills
Collaborative mindset with the ability to work cross-functionally across departments
Committed, detail-oriented, and ready to step into a high-impact leadership role
Job Offer
Competitive Base Salary: up to $200K (commensurate with experience)
Bonus: 25% target, with up to 15% stretch potential
Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision plans eligible the first month after 90 days
Retirement: 401(k) with company match
Paid Time Off: 3 weeks PTO, 10 paid holidays, plus 1 floating holiday
